Hinge side is named as you'd see it from inside your home — the same way architects' window schedules read. The diagram shows the outside view, so hinges appear mirrored (a hinge-left window shows them on the right), just like an exterior elevation on your plans. The wide end of the arrow marks the hinges; the point shows the side that opens.
